For many years the Catholic people of the dioceses of Leeds, Middlesborough and Hallam have seen on lists of Mass Intentions “The Yorkshire Brethren" or simply “YB”.

What is The Yorkshire Brethren Society?

The Society was founded around the year 1660 by priests and laypeople of Yorkshire to establish a fund that would collect and invest money, the revenue helping to support priests from the Yorkshire Dioceses (now Middlesbrough, Leeds and Hallam) who are unable to carry out their ministry because of ill health or who have resigned from their ecclesiastical office due to age or for reason of health.

Who can become a Benefactor?

All priests and lay people who contribute at least the sum of £50.00 may become Benefactors.

One can also enrol deceased relatives and friends.

Who benefits from the Society?

i   Each Benefactor benefits spiritually:

Five Holy Masses are offered during life or after death, as requested, and all share in the Holy Masses offered each month by Priest Members for all of the Benefactors.

As Catholics, it is our sacred duty to pray for the Holy Souls. By becoming a Benefactor of the Society, or by enrolling deceased members of our families and our friends, we not only pray for them, but share with them in the fruits of all the Holy Masses offered by Priest Members of the Society every month

ii   Priest Members:

Grants are given to sick priest members whilst away from their duties and an annual monetary gift is given to assist priest members who have resigned from ecclesiastical office.

The Society is now helping to support around 90 priests who have resigned from ecclesiastical office.

The Trustees

The Yorkshire Brethren Society is served by Trustees proposed and elected from amongst the Priest Members. They meet at least three times each year to distribute funds as necessary. They also consult with the investment experts engaged by the Society, thus ensuring the responsible management of the Fund.

The Society is a Registered Charity (No. 511025)
